I ALMOST FEEL LIKE DOING IT AGAIN
The Show Jeroen Offerman, Andrea Thal, Maria Bustnes, David Blandy curated by Barnaby Drabble
1st-10th October 2004
Curated by Barnaby Drabble the show brings together works which all take as their starting point the re-presentation of pieces of popular music in a new context, addressing the questions raised by copying and homage and finding hidden meanings in the possibilities offered by the cover version.
David Blandys Video Trilogy, Passage of the Soul, depicts the artist miming to his record collection unassumingly allying himself, a young white man, to the black protagonists of soul, funk and hip hop tracks. The resultant, often amusing contrast between content and presentation, coupled to the artist deadpan, and dead accurate, delivery raises questions about cultural traits in rock and roll and the transformational power of karaoke.
Maria Bustnes twoscreen video installation The girl band project, Chilimango -Paint it Black, was selected for this years Berlin Biennale and has won acclaim for its subtle depiction of the lives and ambitions of a teenage girl band from provincial Sweden. Alongside documentary material the centrepiece of the work is a black and white video projection of the band performing the Rolling Stones classic Paint it Black.
Jeroen Offermans award winning performance and video work, Stairway explores the hysteria that surrounded certain music recordings in the 1960s. Inspired by the rumour that certain rock bands encoded satanic messages in their recordings. Offerman spent months learning to sing Led Zeppelins Stairway to Heaven backwards, offering us an abstract performance which when filmed and reversed leaves the audience surprised by its accuracy.
Since 2001, the Zürich based artist Andrea Thal has been collecting the records of and memorabilia about feminist influenced punk and rock groups of the late seventies and early eighties. Her installation at K3, will look at the history of the much covered and referenced track, Oh Bondage, Up Yours by the British band the X-Ray Spex. The artist has invited special musical guests to perform within the installation on the opening night: The Band Kunst .
